


Design In Action: Inspiration Tour of Greater Manchester
Urban Vision's 2007 training programme for local authorities and regeneration professionals got off to a good start on 6 June with a tour of exemplary developments in Greater Manchester.
Some 25 delegates from North Staffordshire enjoyed a day of superb weather visitng four model developments, each illustrating a different aspect of good design:
- Stamford Brook - a sustainable housing development delivered by a partnership between landwoners the National Trust , and developers Taylor Woodrow
- New Islington - a master plan for a millennium community in East Manchester drawn up by architect Will Alsop and currently being implemented by Urban Splash
- Exchange Square - a lively piece of urban design in the heart of the city by EDAW for Manchester City Council (see main image above)
- Chimney Pot Park - the re-working of several streets of largely abandoned terraced houses in Salford again by Urban Splash to create modern apartment living
Design In Action continues with a series of five half-day seminars focusing on master planning, the Building For Life method of assessing housing quality, public realm, the refurbishment of older housing, and sustainable development.
